Ballast Water Testing

The monitoring requirements apply to ballast water discharges from vessels using ballast water treatment systems, ensuring compliance with effluent limitations.

Biological Monitoring

Once a ballast water treatment system is installed onboard, discharges are subject to compliance monitoring based on device approval data.

• Devices with High Quality Data: Initial – 2 times/year; Maintenance – 1–2 times/year*
• Devices without High Quality Data: Initial – 4 times/year; Maintenance – 4 times/year
• *Monitoring may be reduced after two consecutive results below permit limits.

Samples must be collected from different discharge events at least 14 days apart, tested independently, and results retained for 3 years.

Residual Biocides Monitoring

Monitoring for residual biocides or derivatives (e.g., chlorine) is required to ensure compliance with discharge standards.

• Devices with High Quality Data: Initial – 3 times in first 10 discharges; Maintenance – 2 times/year
• Devices without High Quality Data: Initial – 5 times in first 10 discharges; Maintenance – 4 times/year

Each sample must be tested promptly using approved methods under 40 CFR Part 136, and results may not be averaged.
